How lovely is your labia

A disturbing number of women, heavily influenced by porn magazines are undergoing 'labiaplasty', an extremely invasive and unnecessary procedure for the purpose of reducing the size of their labias in order to copy the appearance of the airbrushed pictures in porn magazines.

This growing trend is worrying for women on many different levels. But until the airbrushing of women is absolutely prohibited in the media, the concept of becoming an 'ideal woman' is just going to keep on getting harder to achieve. But the porn editors are passing the buck to the censorship standards which apparently restrict the magazines from showing what a woman actually looks like. Ridiculous, isn't it?

Recent attention has been been drawn to this issue with both ABC's Hungry Beast and Triple J's Hack program both doing segments on this topic. You can refer to the abc website to find video and audio on this topic.

  2. Describing labiaplasty as "extremely invasive" is just a blatant lie. The surgery is minimally invasive, less so than breast augmentation, lipo or any other number of cosmetic procedures.

You can disagree with the reason women choose to have the procedure, but the simple fact is that the vast majority of them are HAPPY with the results.

Who are you to decide what should and should not make a woman happy?

  3. I've been away. Just catching up. Now Vanessa has opened the floor for discussion and no one is responding.
Thank you Vanessa, for your info on the 'invasive-ness' of labiaplasty.
I agree that 'freedom to choose' is exactly that. I also think discussion on this topic is healthy. It helps others understand and it may assist in guiding those who are considering surgery for the opinion of others rather than themselves.
    My thoughts, open for attack......
The more it becomes acceptable to surgically alter your body, the more we are placing the emphasis on the outside and not the inside.
It highlights that beauty is about money. (You have to be able to afford surgery)
If you don't like your body and you don't have money, tough luck ugly person...or, make it your priority to work harder so you can be beautiful. Hmm.....
I know people who's state of mind improved with surgical enhancement. Its a fact. It can really help people feel better about themselves. Doesn't mean I believe its a good thing in general.
